The Haematology Department of the University Hospital of Heraklion is the nationally recognized academic referral and treatment Haematology center for the area of Crete. It provides care for patients with any type of hematology (blood) disorder. The inpatient service includes supportive care, chemotherapy treatment and transfusion of blood products as well as patient education and central line maintenance. A number of clinical trials are also being conducted. The outpatient service offers initial consultation and second opinion for any type of haematologic disorders from a panel of experienced haematologists and also follow-up care of the patients. A reference neutropenia outpatient clinic is also available.The Haematology Department comprises also the Autologous Haemopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation Unit and the Public Umbilical Cord Blood Bank of Crete. The Department of Haematology is supported by the "Association of Friends of the Haematology Department - Anagennisi".

The Haematology Department offers a high-standard 4-year fellowship program for the specialization of Haematology and also participates in the core of the curriculum of the Medical School of the University of Crete. Residents, fellows and students benefit from the educational program offered from the faculty members, clinicians and health personnel of the Department and they are also trained through a continuing medical educational program in association with an up-to-date clinical training program in the inpatient, outpatient and consultation services.

Appointments:

New patients must have a referral note from their primary care provider and should contact the Secretary/Coordinator of the outpatient clinics of the University Hospital of Heraklion or the Secretary of the Haematology Department.

Follow-up patients and patients for the outpatient neutropenia clinic should contact the Secretary of the Haematology Department.
